Special School District has released information for families about a return to school on Aug. 24.
The full text of the letter is as follows:
July 20, 2020
Dear SSD school students, families and staff,
Along with other school districts, we have been keeping a close eye on the ever-changing health and safety concerns within the county due to the pandemic. We’ve ultimately developed plans based on different scenarios that would support learning for our students and at the same time provide safety for students and staff.
Today we are announcing our return-to-school plan with the caveat that the plan can change at any time depending on the health and safety circumstances in the area.
As things stand right now at noon on July 20, 2020, SSD schools will open on Aug. 24, 2020, and we will offer Plan A – Family Choice to students who attend SSD schools and their families. Under this plan, families can choose one of two options for their child. Option one is for the child to attend his or her SSD school in person five days per week. Option two is 100 percent distance learning for the first quarter with a flexible option for receiving related services in person at an SSD school.
SSD’s second plan is Plan B – 100 Percent Distance Learning, which would be the only choice for students and families in the event that SSD schools are closed for health and/or safety concerns. Due to the closure of the buildings, this plan does not allow for families to access the flexible option for receiving related services in person at one of our SSD schools.
There are more resources on the SSD website, including an SSD Return-to-School Guidance document, re-entry plans for each SSD school and information about SSD’s distance learning plan. Families will receive a message from their child’s SSD school principal tomorrow asking them to make a choice for instructional services – option 1 for in-person attendance or option 2 for 100 percent distance learning for the first quarter.
In the coming weeks, we will continue to monitor health issues and the safety situation in the area and will provide you with weekly updates on Mondays. While Plan A – Family Choice is currently our plan for returning to school on Aug, 24, that plan is subject to change.
Thank you for your support, patience and flexibility during these unprecedented times. Take care and stay safe.
Elizabeth Keenan, Ph.D.
