LHWHS senior Max Yang earned a gold medal at the 18th International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) held online in July.
The annual competition invites top geography students aged 16 to 19 from all over the world to represent their country; this year, 209 students represented 54 different countries.
Yang was one of only 18 students, and the only American student, to earn a gold medal at the event.
As a senior member of Team USA, Yang also helped his team earn an 8th-place overall finish.
Students representing their countries are chosen from thousands who participate in their own national-level geography competitions; Yang was selected to Team USA after he won the 2022 U.S. Geography Championship.
He and three other members attended a training camp to prepare for the written test, multimedia test, and fieldwork exercise that make up the competition.
Yang's achievement follows a silver medal performance at iGeo in 2021.
The iGeo tests the abilities of participants in identifying geographical patterns and processes, as well as in analyzing environmental, social, and health issues from a geographical lens.
The program also includes poster presentations by teams and cultural exchanges.
