Spoede Elementary Teacher Receives Heartwarming Surprise “Pumpkin Pick Me Up”

The Halloween season and a special act of kindness reminded the Spoede Elementary community what it means to show up for one another.

Every year, Y98’s The Bret Mega Show spreads a little seasonal joy through its “Pumpkin Pick Me Up” campaign, where listeners nominate someone who could use a boost of happiness during the holidays. This year, Spoede ESOL teacher Maggie Markley was one of those special recipients—nominated by her cousin, Allison Adamson, who listens to the show each morning.

“I nominated my cousin Maggie to bring a little bit of joy and hopefully a smile,” Allison shared. “She lost her father last month and has been planning his upcoming celebration of life, and this was a way to show her that she’s loved, supported, and appreciated. She shows up every day for her students and her family, and I just wanted her to feel recognized.”

With the help of Spoede Principal Issac Bjerk and the Spoede staff, the radio crew and her cousin pulled off the surprise—complete with donuts, coffee, and of course, a big pumpkin.

“It was such a great surprise,” Maggie said. “I was feeling a little overwhelmed heading into the weekend, and this just helped so much. It means everything—it was exactly what I needed.”

Bret, the show’s host, shared that the tradition began as a way to spread light during a time of year that can be difficult for many.

“We hand-deliver pumpkins to people who might need a little pick-me-up,” he said. “It’s about reminding people that the small things—family, traditions, and community—make the biggest difference.”

This thoughtful gesture served as a touching reminder of the power of compassion, connection, and family values that shine brightly at Spoede and across the Ladue Schools community
