NSPA Announces Six LHWHS Students as Finalists for Individual Awards Competitions

The Ladue Schools community is celebrating six students who have recently been named finalists for the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) Individual Awards. 

NSPA Individual Awards honor the nation’s best scholastic journalism — in a wide range of categories. The awards are presented to individuals and small teams, divided into 46 contests across 11 divisions.

The following students were selected as finalists in their contest and division: 

  • Emily Liu, Portfolio of the Year: Artist of the Year

  • Emily Liu, Portfolio of the Year: Designer of the Year

  • Emily Liu, Design of the Year: Literary/Specialty Magazine Page/Spread--"Submerge Divider"

  • Emily Liu, Design of the Year: Informational Graphic--"Coastal Crisis"

  • Vincent Hsiao, Portfolio of the Year: Photographer of the Year

  • Vincent Hsiao, Will Kodner, Design of the Year: Illustration--"World on Fire"

  • Vincent Hsiao, Mimi Zhou, Design of the Year: Newsmagazine Cover--"The Food Issue"

  • Vincent Hsiao, Photo of the Year: Sports Game/Action Photo--"Perfect Pass"

  • Kelly Zhang, Cartoon of the Year: Editorial Cartoon-- "Shopping for Stanley"

  • Mimi Zhou, Design of the Year: Literary/Specialty Magazine Cover--"Melodrama"

  • Mac Huffman, Photo of the Year: Environmental Portrait--"Guiding Light"

  • Grace Kweon, Story of the Year: Opinion--"A Distorted Democracy"

Approximately 450 entries were named finalists in the 2024 NSPA Individual Awards. The competition is rigorous, with nine percent of the 4,800 entries earning finalist status. 

Winners will be announced on Nov. 9 at the NSPA Awards Ceremony during the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention in Philadelphia. The top five winners and five honorable mentions will be named in each contest. The NSPA website will display a gallery of the winners and honorable mentions.
