Freshman Phenomenon: Elle Saleeby Crowned Stem Festival Champion

Ladue Horton Watkins High School (LHWHS) freshman Elle Saleeby has been named a 2025 National STEM Champion, a prestigious recognition awarded to nearly 100 students nationwide. Elle is one of only two students from Missouri to receive this honor, highlighting her outstanding contributions to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The National STEM Festival, presented by EXPLR, invited students from grades 7-12 to submit their innovative ideas, inventions, and research in six categories: Aerospace Innovation, Environmental Stewardship, Future Food, Health and Medicine, Powering the Planet, and Tech for Good. This nationwide competition celebrates creative problem-solving and recognizes the brightest young minds shaping the future of STEM.

Elle’s award-winning project addresses reducing school cafeteria food waste, combining innovation with practical impact. This project, which she began last year under the mentorship of Ladue Middle School science teacher Martin Long, stood out among hundreds of submissions.

As one of the 106 National STEM Champions, Elle will attend the National STEM Festival in Washington, D.C., from March 19-22, 2025. The event allows students to present their projects to a diverse audience, including the public, business leaders, and government officials. Each Champion will receive an all-expenses-paid trip, including travel and lodging, accompanied by a guardian. Participants can connect with other young innovators and inspire each other while gaining valuable insights.

In addition to the trip, EXPLR is granting each Champion free access to its educational streaming video and curriculum platform for the teacher of their choice—a gesture aimed at inspiring continued excellence in STEM education.

Elle’s achievement showcases her creativity and dedication while emphasizing the importance of empowering young minds to address real-world challenges. Her project reflects the shared mission of the Festival and Ladue Schools to create a positive impact locally and globally.

Congratulations to Elle Saleeby on this remarkable achievement! Her success showcases the talent, passion, and determination of students in the Ladue School District, highlighting the impactful contributions young innovators can make in our schools and communities.
