Celebrating World Languages Collaboration: Students Connect Across Ladue Schools Through Spanish

Sometimes the most powerful learning happens when students come together—and that’s exactly what took place during a recent world languages collaboration between Ladue Horton Watkins High School and Reed Elementary School.

Earlier this month, Level V Spanish students from LHWHS visited their “hermanitos”—kindergarten students in Ms. Kathryn Silvey’s class at Reed Elementary—for a joyful and meaningful in-person experience. While the groups had already exchanged Spanish messages earlier in the semester and again around Thanksgiving, this visit marked their first face-to-face meeting.

During the visit, students spent time getting to know one another, singing holiday carols in Spanish, and creating festive cards together. The classroom was filled with smiles, laughter, and authentic conversations as older and younger students bonded through shared language and culture.

The collaboration was led by Dr. Haydee Taylor-Arnold, Spanish teacher at Ladue Horton Watkins High School, and Ms. Brígida Paglusch, Spanish and World Language teacher at Reed Elementary. Inspired by the promising practice Big Brothers and Sisters Helping Little Brothers and Sisters, the initiative focused on promoting empathy, leadership, service, and meaningful communication—all while strengthening Spanish language skills.

By connecting students across grade levels, the experience allowed high school students to practice leadership and mentorship, while kindergarteners gained confidence and excitement around learning a new language. It also reinforced the idea that language learning is about forming relationships, understanding others, and building a sense of community.

Ladue Schools is grateful to Dr. Taylor-Arnold, Ms. Paglusch, and Ms. Silvey for their collaboration and dedication to creating an experience that was both impactful and memorable for students
