Celebrating the Lasting Legacy of Karen Morris Watkins: Educator, Trailblazer, and Ladue Schools Champion

A year after her passing, the Ladue School District continues to honor and reflect on the remarkable life of Karen Morris Watkins, a beloved educator, community leader, and advocate for lifelong learning.

Earlier this year, Watkins was posthumously inducted into the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) Alumni Hall of Fame, Class of 2025, a tribute to a career and life spent transforming education and championing equity. A 1966 graduate of SIUE’s School of Education, Health and Human Behavior, she was chosen as the school’s honoree for her profound impact in the classroom and beyond.

Karen Morris Watkins spent 21 of her 32 years in education as a first-grade teacher at Spoede Elementary, where she was known for her warmth, innovation, and dedication to every child who walked through her door. She earned national recognition, including the Excellence in Education Award from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Blue Ribbon Program, and helped pioneer integrated learning centers, pilot programs, and instructional models that continue to shape how we teach and reach students.

"Karen Morris Watkins had such a love for Spoede Elementary School and a deep love for the kids. Even after retirement, she kept showing up to help out as a substitute teacher and volunteer reader," said Dr. Jennifer Riesenmy, Equity and Strategic Initiatives Coordinator. "Karen was a true trailblazer and a beloved teacher. She was also one of our district's first African American teachers. When I first met her, I was a very young teacher just beginning my career, and I was in awe of how she made her students feel cared for while also holding them accountable. Not everyone can do that. Karen was an outstanding role model, and I tried to bring that same love and energy to my classroom throughout my career."

Even after retirement, Watkins returned to serve as Ladue Schools’ Oasis Coordinator, bridging generations by connecting older adult volunteers with students for mentoring and reading support. It was yet another example of her belief that learning—and love—has no age limit.

Her influence extended far beyond the classroom. Watkins was a steadfast community volunteer and a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Webster Groves, a role that reflected her values of service, compassion, and faith. She inspired not only students, but fellow educators, families, and community members throughout the St. Louis region.

Karen Morris Watkins passed away in August 2024, just months before her Hall of Fame induction. Yet her voice, vision, and values continue to resonate in the lives she touched—and in the schools, programs, and people she helped shape.

Her legacy is a reminder that great educators do more than teach—they lead, lift, and leave a lasting mark on the world. Ladue Schools is forever grateful to have been part of her extraordinary journey.
