    *Students are not required to purchase and/or eat breakfast. Just like lunch, there are several options that are paid for in the same manner. All students, regardless if they bring their lunch or not, have the option of purchasing the school breakfast and/or lunch.  Parents must submit a written request if they do not want their child(ren) to purchase breakfast or school lunch (if they have brought their lunch from home).

    Some students at Reed School have life-threatening allergies. Because of this, one table in the cafeteria is designated the “Allergy Aware Table.” The allergy-aware table must be free of all the food containing life-threatening allergens.

    Students practice hand-washing after eating lunch. This is a good health practice, especially during the flu season, to help prevent the spread of allergens. Hand-washing helps to prevent contact with certain foods that can occur through cross-contamination (For example, food residue could be transferred from a student’s hand to a table and then to a student with a life-threatening food allergy). 

Birthday Acknowledgements

  • Birthdays are special times in children’s lives. As birthdays are acknowledged and celebrated, it is equally important to ensure that our children are safe and healthy. To avoid serving unhealthy food and/or food that may contain life-threatening food ingredients, we celebrate and acknowledge birthdays at Reed without using food.

    Instead of using food to celebrate, classroom teachers acknowledge students’ birthdays in various ways. Only invitations to parties that include the entire class may be distributed at school. 

Classroom Holiday Parties

  • Halloween / Winter / Valentine’s Day

    Holiday parties are wonderful opportunities for the students, staff, and parents to bond and celebrate with one another. As with all events, it is equally important to ensure our children are safe and all students can participate. For inclusivity reasons, we strive to provide the same snack for all students.  However, when needed, a comparable snack will be provided for any student that cannot have the class-provided snack. All food served at holiday parties must be free of peanuts and tree nuts. In addition, they need to follow the Healthy Snack Guidelines. The nurse must receive a proposed list of food items from the room parent two weeks prior to the party.  

    Because few establishments ensure their products are free of and do not come in contact with certain ingredients that may cause life-threatening allergic reactions, all food items must be store-bought and individually wrapped, listing all ingredients on a printed food label. Even though candy may be individually wrapped, it is not allowed during parties and/or in teacher classrooms at Reed due to possible cross-contamination. Parents planning parties are encouraged to purchase food items through Chartwell’s, the district’s food service provider, as it can ensure that all food items are safe for our students. For a small fee Chartwell’s offers many allergen-free food items that can be consumed by all students. Contact Chartwells at (314) 983-5443 to place an order at least five days ahead. Parents will be notified if any other additional allergens are life-threatening to any of our students, and parents will be asked not to send foods containing these ingredients. 


  • All classrooms have a scheduled snack time. Students may bring a healthy snack or purchase a healthy snack (ex., bananas, oranges, or apples). Parents of specific classrooms will be notified if there are any contact or airborne allergens that are life-threatening to any of our students, and parents will be asked not to send snacks containing these foods. 

Teacher Purchased Food for Curricular / Classroom Purchases

  • At rare times, teachers use food to teach a concept, give students real-life experiences, and/or celebrate accomplishments. Teachers are expected to follow the District Healthy Snack Guidelines and Holiday Party Guidelines in addition to developing safety plans, which are shared with the parents of students who have life-threatening food allergies.
