Student Technology Guidebook

At Ladue School District, we believe digital technologies—including artificial intelligence (AI)—are most effective when they enhance teaching and learning. Technology is intentionally integrated to deepen learning, foster creativity, strengthen collaboration, and prepare students for success in college, careers, and life.

While digital technologies can organize information, generate ideas, and improve efficiency, they do not replace human thinking, relationships, or professional judgment. Students remain active learners, educators remain instructional experts, and technology serves as a powerful partner in the learning process.

At Ladue School District, we are committed to preparing every student for success in college, careers, and life. Through innovative, individualized, and inquiry-based learning experiences, students will develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to thrive in a digital and AI-enabled world.

Digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, support this vision by expanding opportunities for students to:

District-issued learning devices are provided to support teaching and learning by giving students access to the digital tools, resources, and learning experiences they need to succeed. Students are expected to use and care for these devices responsibly while following all district policies and expectations.

District-Issued Learning Devices

Each student is assigned a district-owned learning device appropriate for their grade level.

• Grades  9-12 | MacBook Air and charger
• Grades 6–8 | iPad, keyboard case, and charger
• Grade 5 | iPad, keyboard case, and charger
• Grades K–4 | iPad, keyboard case, and charger

All learning devices, chargers, and accessories remain the property of the Ladue School District.

Students are expected to bring their district-issued learning device to school each day, fully charged and ready to support learning.

• Grades 9–12: Students keep their learning device throughout the school year. Devices are collected each summer for maintenance and reissued at the beginning of the next school year.
• Grades 6–8: Students keep their learning device during the school year, including winter and spring breaks. Devices are collected each summer for maintenance and reissued at the beginning of the next school year.
• Grades K–5: Learning devices are primarily used during the school day and remain at school unless otherwise directed by the district or classroom teacher for a specific instructional purpose.

Students who graduate, withdraw from the district, or receive a replacement device must return all district-issued equipment, including the device, charger, and accessories.

To support an engaging and focused learning environment, personal electronic devices, including cell phones, smart watches, laptops, and other personal devices, are not to be used during the school day, unless required for a district-sponsored activity, or approved by the building principal in accordance with district policy.

If a district-issued device is lost, damaged, or not functioning properly, students should notify a teacher or contact the Technology Department as soon as possible.

Your district-issued learning device is an educational resource that supports teaching and learning. Students are expected to use and care for their learning device responsibly so it is ready to support learning every day.
 

Students are expected to:

• Handle the learning device and accessories with care.
• Keep food, drinks, and permanent markings away from the learning device.
• Keep the protective case on at all times and leave the district asset tag intact.
• Transport the learning device in a backpack or protective sleeve.
• Store the learning device in a safe, temperature-controlled location.
• Clean the screen only with a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
• Report lost, stolen, damaged, or malfunctioning learning devices immediately.

Charging and Storage

Students in Grades 6–12 are responsible for bringing their learning device to school each day fully charged and ready for learning.

When not in use, learning devices should be stored securely according to school or classroom procedures.
Intentional damage, vandalism, or misuse—including writing on the device, removing asset tags, or damaging accessories—is not covered by the district's protection plan and may result in repair or replacement costs.

Students are expected to use district-issued learning devices safely, responsibly, and in accordance with district policies, applicable laws, and the principles of good digital citizenship.

Students should:

• Protect passwords and personal information.
• Respect the privacy, intellectual property, and digital work of others.
• Use district technology for educational purposes.
• Refrain from altering device settings, installing unauthorized software, or attempting to access another user's account or files.

Misuse of district technology may result in disciplinary action consistent with district policy.

Artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance teaching and learning when used responsibly. Students may use district-approved AI tools as directed by their teacher and in accordance with Board Policy EHBD.

Students are expected to:

• Use AI ethically and with academic integrity.
• Protect confidential and personally identifiable information.
• Use AI to support learning—not to misrepresent AI-generated work as their own.
• Create respectful, appropriate content that does not harm or harass others.

Misuse of AI may result in disciplinary action consistent with district policy.

District-issued learning devices, accounts, and networks are educational resources. To maintain a safe learning environment, the district may monitor activities conducted on district devices, accounts, and networks.

Students should:

• Protect their personal information and the privacy of others.
• Think carefully before sharing content online.
• Report inappropriate or unsafe online content to a trusted adult.

Ladue School District uses content filtering and monitoring tools, including Securly, to support student safety. Families of students in Grades 5–12 may monitor their student's online activity outside of school using the Securly Home app.

Lost or stolen learning devices should be reported immediately to a teacher, school office, or the Technology Department.

A temporary replacement device may be provided while the incident is being resolved. A police report is required for stolen devices. Repair or replacement costs are determined in accordance with the district's Device Protection Plan and Board policy.
