Course Description

The primary focus of the 6th-12th grade library media curriculum is to cultivate student readers and researchers who can independently and efficiently navigate, select, evaluate, and use library resources in support of their academic endeavors and to expand their personal interests.

Strand 1: Library Appreciation

Strand 2: Navigating the Library and Information Resources

What is the purpose of the library? How do I access and use the library’s physical and digital resources? How can I effectively find accurate information? What is our role and the role of others as members of the library community?	Patrons recognize the Librarian(s) and library as a valuable resource for success. Patrons bring curiosity to the library. Patrons seek answers to their questions. Patrons are part of a larger community and are responsible for care of the resources and the space. Patrons can seek and find materials that offer a diversity of perspectives. Patrons can navigate the library and its website using skills such as searching, locating, and evaluating. Patrons provide recommendations and feedback within the library community. Patrons collaboratively build the library’s collection. Patrons can explain that there is an order in the library and apply that knowledge of organizational systems to various settings. Patrons can predict their information needs and ask effective questions. They can find and access the information needed. By adjusting search strategies and identifying information gaps, they exhibit grit and perseverance during research. Ultimately, they can use and synthesize information to meet their personal and academic goals. Researchers display curiosity through inquiry by defining a topic and generating questions. Researchers work to broaden and deepen understanding and apply new information to accomplish a goal.
