Dyslexia Screening
The Ladue School District recognizes that early literacy skills are strong predictors of lifelong academic success for students. In order to support the development of such valuable literacy skills for students, we have numerous school and district-level supports in place, including:
- High-quality curriculum for all students
- High-quality classroom teachers
- Regular assessments of each child’s literacy progress
- A comprehensive multi-tiered system of support process
Every year, in its endeavor to provide the highest-quality education and support for all learners, the district administers comprehensive literacy screeners to every student. Since early intervention is key to improving a student’s literacy skills, our goal is to identify students who need additional support in reading at the earliest opportunity and to intervene with research-based strategies. Additionally, as a part of the updated Missouri State Literacy Initiative, districts are required to:
- Administer a foundational skills reading assessment to all students in grades K-3
- All students in grades K-3 must be screened for components of dyslexia
- Any student in grades 4-12 may be screened at the request of a parent or teacher
- Schools will provide training on dyslexia and interventions to support students' reading below grade level expectations
- Schools will communicate with parents/guardians regarding any action plan created after the screening
- Develop a Reading Success Plan (RSP) for students identified as having a substantial deficiency in reading
The screeners will not tell us whether your child has dyslexia. However, they will provide valuable information to help us plan for further instructional support if necessary.
We are honored to have the privilege to work with you and your student to build their skills as an independent reader across the curriculum. As a commitment to your students’ success, we screen all K-8 students three times a year to monitor their progress and provide appropriate instructional support. After screening, we will contact you if we have concerns about your child’s literacy progress and the supports recommended.
Please visit the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s (DESE) website for additional information. You can also contact the reading specialist by email at your child’s school if you have any questions or concerns.
