Four Ladue Horton Watkins HIgh School students will get the opportunity to work side-by-side with top scientists this summer and gain hands-on experience in a laboratory research setting. 2013-14 seniors Jacob Jacob, Sarah Jacob, Christine Yan and Yu Ze Zhu are four of nearly 90 high school students from the St. Louis area and beyond who will take part in the program. Following is the full news release provided by the University of Missouri St. Louis as the coordinator of the Students and Teachers as Research Scientists (STARS) program.

University of Missouri–St. Louis summer STARS program draws students from across the nation

Nearly 90 students will participate in the program

It’s a dream come true for aspiring teenage scientists – the chance to work side-by-side with top scientists and gain hands-on experience within a laboratory research setting.

Academically-talented high school juniors and seniors will get an opportunity to do just that during the 2013 Students and Teachers as Research Scientists (STARS) program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. This year nearly 90 high school students from the St. Louis metro area, as well as Connecticut, Florida, Illinois and even Greece will take part in the program, which will run from June 10 to July 19.

“The university is thrilled to once again open its doors to some of the brightest science students in the St. Louis area,” said Tom George, chancellor of UMSL. “High school students interested in a science career get a big head start with their participation in the STARS program.”

The prestigious six-week summer science program will pair students with top research mentors from the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, Saint Louis University, Washington University in St. Louis and the host institution UMSL.

Experts from the four institutions will take on student apprentices in laboratories and direct students in research projects. Also, students will attend lectures by nationally known scientists from the St. Louis science community, learn information concerning the higher education admission process, and enjoy social events such as bowling, a movie, an ice cream social, the St. Louis Symphony and a St. Louis Cardinals game.

Elaine Krul, a lead researcher at Solae who serves as an adviser to STARS students is a big fan of the program, which she notes allows students to expand their education far beyond the classroom into the real world.

“Our country needs to cultivate these great minds and the STARS program allows the students to experience things they did not know about at the start of the summer and come away with a sense of accomplishing something that, in the long run, will benefit humanity,” she said.

STARS is funded partially through LMI Aerospace/D3 Technologies, the Office of the Chancellor at UMSL, SLU, Wash U and Solae.

STARS will conclude its six week program with a confirmation ceremony at 3 p.m. July 19 at the E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater in the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL. The event is free and open to the public.

The students for the 2013 STARS program are:

Out of 156 submissions, Madison Grady was one of 12 artists chosen to illustrate this year’s Grannie Annie. Her illustration for the story Attack of the Polar Bear will be published in the Grannie Annie Anthology of Family Stories Volume 8. Following is the news release provided by The Grannie Annie.

St. Louis, Mo., April 25, 2013—Madison Grady, fifth grader from Old Bonhomme Elementary School, is among the fourteen 4th- through 8th-grade artists from the St. Louis area who will have their illustrations of historical family stories exhibited May 1–30 at Gya Community Gallery, 2700 Locust Street (63103). A special Exhibit Open House will be held Saturday, May 4, from 2:00 to 4:00. Regular gallery hours for the rest of the exhibit are Friday 4–7, Saturday 11–4, Sunday 1–4, and Monday 11–4.

The illustrations, which will be available for purchase, were submitted to accompany stories in “Grannie Annie, Vol. 8,” to be released in May by The Grannie Annie Family Story Celebration, a local nonprofit that invites 4th- through 8th-graders around the world to discover, write, and share stories from their family’s history, and to submit them to The Grannie Annie for possible publication. The stories in Volume 8 span nearly one hundred years and take place on four continents. Most of the drawings in the exhibit will also appear in this forthcoming book.

Madison’s illustration accompanies the story “The Attack of the Polar Bear,” written by Daniel Volobuev from Conway Elementary School, also in the Ladue School District. In addition to being in the exhibit, Madison’s illustration will be included in “Grannie Annie, Vol. 8.”

The exhibit is a collaboration between the Yeyo Arts Collective, a local nonprofit dedicated to women’s art and topics surrounding women’s issues—including family, youth, and community; and The Grannie Annie Family Story Celebration. Dail Chambers, founder of the Yeyo Arts Collective, serves as illustration consultant to The Grannie Annie. Financial assistance to The Grannie Annie for this year’s Family Story Celebration has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.

Grannie Annie stories, their authors, and their illustrators will be further celebrated at an author reading / art show / book signing at the downtown Left Bank Books, 321 N. 10th Street (63101) on Saturday, June 1, at 2:00. Illustrations from “Grannie Annie, Vol. 8,” will also be exhibited there and available for purchase.

Santiago Beltran Miranda Receives National Recognition for His Academic Achievement and Commitment to Technology Access and Education

GLENDALE, CALIF. – April 2, 2013 – Nestlé USA today awarded 18-year-old Santiago Beltran Miranda of St. Louis its prestigious Nestlé Very Best In Youth award. Santiago joins 17 other outstanding young leaders from across the country recognized as the 2013 Nestlé Very Best In Youth. Now in its 16th year, the awards program honors young people for their academic excellence and proven dedication to improving communities and creating a better tomorrow.

A budding entrepreneur and founder of web application service provider, Protser.com, Santiago launched Ladue High School’s U-Tech Club to share his skills with other students. One year later, he founded the Tech Access Project, which takes refurbished computers, installs new software and distributes them to students and local partner organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs. His project has provided computer access to more than 400 students since 2010.

Santiago hopes to study electrical engineering with a focus on developing new telecommunications technology to help connect people around the world.

“Accounting for more than half of the global population, young people must take an active role in shaping tomorrow’s world,” said Ken Bentley, Nestlé vice president of community affairs & educational programs and author of the Nestlé Very Best In Youth book series. “Nestlé is proud to recognize this year’s Nestlé Very Best In Youth whose volunteerism, leadership, and entrepreneurial spirit are making a meaningful impact on communities around the world.”

Along with being named a Nestlé Very Best In Youth, Santiago will receive a $1,000 donation to the charity of his choice and will be flown with a parent or guardian to Los Angeles for a red-carpet awards ceremony. Santiago’s achievements will also be featured in the Nestlé Very Best In Youth book, distributed to schools, libraries and community organizations nationwide and available for the first time in e-book format in the summer of 2013.

Hundreds of student entries were submitted to Nestlé USA for consideration in this year’s competition. Leaders of service projects ranging from wildlife preservation and energy innovation to international poverty relief, the 18 youth honored with the Nestlé Very Best In Youth award are shining examples amongst their peers and communities.

Since 1997, Nestlé USA has donated more than $1 million to organizations supported by Nestlé Very Best In Youth students.
