Ladue Schools Students Compete at U.S. Chess Federation SuperNationals VI

Seventeen Ladue School District students competed in the U.S. Chess Federation SuperNationals VI tournament from May 11-14 in Nashville, Tennessee. This is the largest-rated chess tournament in history, with 5,577 competitors and 1,586 teams from 50 states.

Students competed in tournament sections according to their grade and U.S. Chess Federation rating. Ten students from Ladue Schools returned to St. Louis with trophies from their individual tournament sections.

Ayden Huang (1) from Conway Elementary competed in the K-1 Championship section and finished in 21st place among 190 players. He was the only student from Missouri to compete in this section. Aaron Lin (2) from Conway Elementary played in the K-3 Championship section and finished 25th in a field of 214 students.

Sahil Chatwal (4) from Spoede Elementary played in the K-8 Under 750 section, and Celina Zhou (3) from Spoede Elementary competed in the K-3 Championship section.

Ladue Schools Students Excel at Missouri State Chess Championships

More than 40 Ladue School District students competed at the Missouri State Chess Championships on Saturday, March 18, in Columbia, Missouri.

The high school team finished 3rd in their division, the LMS 8th and under team won their division, the LMS 6th grade and under team finished in 2nd place in their division, the Spoede team was 3rd in the 5th grade and under division and won the 3rd grade and under championship, and the Conway team finished in 2nd place in the 3rd and under division.

In addition, several students are state champions in their sections: Aaron Lin (Conway, 3rd grade and under), Benjamin Shoykhet (LMS, 8th grade and under), and Jason Pummer (LHWHS, High School Board 3).

Many of these students will be competing at the US Chess Federation SuperNationals VI tournament in Nashville in May!

Thirty Students Compete in Gateway Chess League Class Tournament

Thirty Ladue School District students competed at the Gateway Chess League Class Tournament held on Saturday, March 4th.

Third Grade and under division

  • The Spoede Elementary team of Rex Zhu (3) , Roy Zhu (1), Anish Shinde (KG), Celina Zhou (3), Kevin Wu (1), Christopher Huang (3), and Bodie Buxner (2) won the 3rd and under division.
  • The Conway Elementary team of Aaron Lin (2), Alex Wang (3), and Ayden Huang (1) came in 3rd place in the 3rd and under division.

Fifth Grade and under division

  • In the 5th grade and under division, Atharva Shinde (4), Cooper Buxner (2), Harper Buxner (4), and Sahil Chatwal (4) (Spoede Elementary) finished in 3rd place.
  • The Ladue Fifth Grade Center team of Zachary Barrett (5), Aditya Jain (5), and Ari Willick (5) finished in 5th place in the 5th and under division.
  • The Reed Elementary team of Jenna Song (3) came in 12th place in the 5th and under division.

Students Take Home Wins from Gateway Chess League Action Tournament

Ladue School District students competed at the Gateway Chess League Action Tournament held this past Saturday, February 18. Spoede Elementary won the 3rd grade and under division, and three students (Alex Zhang, Katie Eisenman, and Tom Xiong) placed first in their individual grade levels.

Third Grade and Under Division

  • The Spoede Elementary team of Alex Zhang, Celina Zhou, Christopher Huang, Roy Zhu, Kevin Wu, Rex Zhu, and Anish Shinde won the 3rd Grade and Under division. The Conway Elementary team of Ayden Huang came in 9th place.
  • Anish Shinde finished in 2nd place in the Kindergarten individual standings.
  • In the 1st grade individual standings, Alex Zhang came in 1st place, Ayden Huang received 2nd place, Roy Zhu came in 4th place, and Kevin Wu finished 6th.
  • In the 3rd grade individual standings, Celina Zhou came in 3rd place, Christopher Huang finished 9th, and Rex Zhu finished in 12th place.

7th Grader & U.S. Youth Chess Team Member Opens Winter Chess Camp for Peers

Iris Zhou, a seventh-grade student at Ladue Middle School and a member of the U.S. national youth chess team, has decided to share what she has learned and teach her peers how to play the game.

Iris was the only student to represent Missouri on the U.S. team in the 2015 World Youth & Cadets Chess Championship, and she qualified for both the 2016 and 2017 competitions.

During winter break, Iris gave a three-day chess camp, free of charge, to the young children in the local community. The “2016 Ice Cream Winter Chess Camp” was held from Dec. 28-30 at the St. Louis Modern Chinese School in the afternoons.

“So many young kids are interested in chess,” Iris said. “I feel good that I can help some of them learn, especially when I inspire some of the young girls to get involved with chess.”

Students Make the Right Moves at Gateway Chess League Fall Open

Students in every level of the Ladue School District showed off their tactical strategy skills at the Gateway Chess League Fall Open held this past Saturday, Nov. 12. Spoede Elementary won the 3rd grade and under division at this tournament, LMS took home two 2nd place team trophies (8th grade and under and 6th grade and under) and LHWHS took home a 3rd place team trophy.

Elementary:

The Spoede Elementary team of Celina Zhou (3), Cooper Buxner (2), Christopher Huang (3), and Alex Zhang (1) won the 3rd grade and under division.

In the 3rd grade and under individual standings, Celina Zhou (3) came in 1st place and Cooper Buxner (2) finished in 7th place.

Fifth Grade

In the 5th grade and under team, Zachary Barrett (5) came in 9th out of 22 teams.

In the 5th grade and under individual standings, Zachary Barrett (5) came in 4th.

Ladue Middle School Chess Teams Succeed at State Championship

Congratulations to Ladue Middle School chess teams for their performance at the state championships this past weekend, March 19, in Columbia, Missouri!

The sixth grade team took home the 2016 state championship title. The team’s co-captain Benjamin Liu took home six wins and no losses two years in a row now. He is also the 2016 Missouri State Champion as an individual.

The members of the school’s 6th grade team include: co-captain Benjamin Liu, co-captain Roshen Chatwal, Daniel Ye, Domenic Fenoglio, Arya Brushan, Aryan Gowda, Alex Rybak, Kanisk Shanmugam and Ian Rothstein.

LMS Student Represents Missouri in World Chess Championship

Congratulations to Iris Zhou, a sixth-grader at Ladue Middle School who represented Missouri on the U.S. team in the 2015 World Youth & Cadets Chess Championship! This year, Iris is the only student in Missouri who qualified for the U.S. national team.

Spoede Elementary School Wins Chess Tournament

On October 12, 2013, Spoede Elementary School clinched its first chess tournament of the year.  Only four Spoede Elementary School players were able to participate at the tournament, held at Crossroads Preparatory School.  However, the team was still able to outperform some of the top rated schools in St. Louis.  Overall, there were 152 students participating K-6, with 10 schools represented.

Spoede Wins Missouri State Chess Tournament

Over the weekend of March 9-10, 2013, Spoede Elementary School students participated, and won first place, in the Missouri State Chess Tournaments in two categories:  Third Grade and Under, and Fifth Grade and Under.  These wins qualifies the team to participate in the National Championship in Nashville, TN in April.
