LHWHS’ Abby Wheeler Receives Excellence in Education Award

At the October 28, 2013 Board of Education meeting, Abby Wheeler, a Science Teacher at Ladue Horton Watkins High School, received the Excellence in Education Award.  Abby started teaching in the Ladue School District in 2010, after teaching at Ritenour High School for seven years. 

She has taught a variety of science courses, including biology, physical science, environmental chemistry and oceanography.  She also coached cross-country and track for three years.

LMS Teacher Maria Page Featured as Outstanding McKendree University Alumnus

October, 2013:  Maria Page, Creative Writing and Video Journalism teacher at Ladue Middle School, is currently featured on the McKendree University Website. She is President of the Alumni Association and is a member of the University Board of Trustees. The article linked below also appeared in “The Magazine for McKendree”, a university communication and marketing publication.

Spoede Elementary School Wins Chess Tournament

On October 12, 2013, Spoede Elementary School clinched its first chess tournament of the year.  Only four Spoede Elementary School players were able to participate at the tournament, held at Crossroads Preparatory School.  However, the team was still able to outperform some of the top rated schools in St. Louis.  Overall, there were 152 students participating K-6, with 10 schools represented.

Fire Prevention Week at Reed

Did you know that two out of every five home fires start in the kitchen? That’s an astounding number and with the help of the Ladue Fire Department, Reed Elementary School students are learning to make their homes and kitchens safer. The Ladue Fire Department made a visit to Reed Elementary School on Thursday, October 18, 2013, to teach kids how to prevent kitchen fires.

LHWHS’ Bry and Thompson Published in Gateway Varsity Sports

In October 2013, Ladue Horton Watkins High School (LHWHS)  juniors Aaron Bry and Danielle Thompson published an article and a photo, respectively, about LHWHS’ girls field hockey team in the second edition of Gateway Varsity Sports, a local magazine featuring area high school sports.  

Ted Nash Performs at Ladue Fifth Grade Center

Grammy-nominated artist Ted Nash recently performed for students at the Ladue Fifth Grade Center.  The performance was coordinated by a parent and provided students the opportunity to enjoy the musical talent of this accomplished musician.

LHWHS’ Dr. Rob Good Published by Organization of American Historians

In the July 2013 edition, The Magazine of History published an article by Ladue Horton Watkins HIgh School social studies teacher Dr. Rob Good.  The article, entitled, “Using E Pluribus Unum as a Narrative Framework for the U.S. History Survey,” addresses the impact of the internet, the release of the U.S. History standards in 1994, and research on historical thinking as a goal for history education on teaching U.S. History survey courses.

LMS Students Volunteer at Urban Harvest

As published by Ladue News on September 26, 2013…

Urban Harvest STL volunteers and Whole Foods Market Galleria team members joined together to prepare the UHSTL downtown community garden for fall. The gardeners weeded, mulched and harvested several pounds of tomatoes to be donated to St. Patrick Center’s McMurphy’s Grill, and enjoyed a free organic salad lunch in honor of the Whole Kids Foundation. Ladue School District middle school students Luke Minkler, Ashley Byer and Maggie Lochmoeller (shown left to right) volunteer at the garden.
