LMS Students Qualify for State MathCounts Competition

On Saturday February 18, 2012, Ladue Middle School took 10 Mathletes and one Alternate, in the 6th-8th grades, to the Regional MathCounts Competition held at Florissant Valley Community College. LMS participants were: Spencer Chen, Hans Chan, Jeffrey Wang, Alex Tan, Justin Chen, Stephanie Zhong, Olivia Long, Tom Liu, Albert Liu, Patrick Hwang, and Barath Palanisamy (Alt). Over 130 participants from schools all over the St. Louis region participated in the competition. 

Students competed as individuals in the Sprint and Target rounds, then teams of 4 from each school competed in the Team round.  The Sprint round consists of 30 questions to be completed in 40 minutes without using a calculator. Each question is valued at 1 point. Immediately afterwards, the students competed in the Target round where they receive 8 questions handed out in pairs to be completed in 6 minutes for each pair of questions. Each question is valued at 2 points. The scores from these two rounds are combined to determine the top 13 individuals who will advance to the State level.
The following Ladue Middle School students placed as noted in order to qualify for the State competition to be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012 in Rolla, MO : Spencer Chen (4th), Hans Chan (5th), Olivia Long (7th), and Alex Tan (8th).
In the Team round the 4-person team was given 10 questions to be completed in 20 minutes. The Ladue Middle School team, consisting of Spencer Chen, Hans Chan, Jeffrey Wang, and Alex Tan, took 1st place to qualify for State as a team on Saturday March 10, 2012 in Rolla, MO.
